Fishing: The lodge has access to the park on Tue, Thur, Sat and Sun for boats but by vehicle every day. “We had a group last year who compared bag sizes and weights for a day’s fishing in the park v’s outside the park and found no difference over a two week period in Sept/Oct. But like all sportsmen, it is nice to have the choice and change of scenery!
We generally only fish with fillets/live bait for coarse fishing but have recently had some success on a variety of poppers and plugs especially on fly. We also find the little meps spinner great for catching the smaller tiger in the backwaters. In the past spoons have also had limited success. We do find that the tiger feeding habits change from season to season – hence bait being the most consistent.
TIGER FISH The tiger fish throws down a steely gauntlet and is a fish that has a reputation of leaving gashes in the sides of lures such as rapalas. It can, given enough encouragement, destroy a fly entirely.
CATFISH There are few places in the world where a catfish is crowned in the beauty stakes and the ubiquitous sharptooth catfish is no exception. However one must give them credit as they provide some worthy sport. One interesting feature of the river is that below the Falls, the vundu, which can attain sizes over 100lb is present, but is not found above the Victoria Falls.
