Abseiling / rappelling, rap jumping and gliding
A fairly new
activity abseiling, also called rappelling is a method climbers use to
get off a mountain but have proved to be a great deal of fun as a activity
in its own right. Abseiling is the art of lowering oneself safely down
a rope. Wearing a climbing harness, which is clipped to a rope with a
descending device, you will walk backwards down a cliff( or a building).
There are a number of very scenic and challenging abseils in South
Africa.
There are opportunities for abseiling in the Drakensburg
Mountains. At 122m(400 feet) , the longest commercial abseiling site
in the world is in the Featherbed Nature Reserve near Knysna, where floodlit
night-time climbs take place.
Namibia’s reputation as a country with perfect conditions for
soaring (gliding) is well established, many soarers regard the thermals
as the best in the world. At Bitterwasser an avenue of palm trees testifies
to more than 10 diamond flights already achieved.
To fully appreciate the incredible size of Victoria Falls, and the awesome
power of the water as it carves into the deep zig zagging gorges for
eight kilometers, one must see it from the air. Micro-light and fixed
wing flights are available. The pilot will take you along the wide tranquil
upper Zambezi, and over the huge 2 km rent in the earth. The breathtaking
sight of this magnificent natural phenomena, seen in all its glory from
the air, is unforgettable. Helicopter Flights are also available.
