Whale Watching
Although at least 7 species of whales and dolphins can be found
in the seas off South Africa , the most common encounters are with Southern
Right, Humpback and Bryde's whales. the Southern Right whale can easily
be recognised by the distinctive callosities or 'rock gardens ' on its
head. Often they frolic in the surf, only metres from the sandy beaches
and rocky outcrops of the Cape- sometimes so close to shore that their
spray drenches the watchers!
Plettenberg Bay is one of the best places
for whalewatching boat trips, with up to seven species being seen in
one day. Common sightings are the Southern Right and the Humpback whales
with calves in season(August to December). Brydes whales and Orcas are
also seen more frequently.
South Africas whale season runs from June
to December, when the females give birth, staying close to shore, suing
shallow waters as a nursery.
The
whales' smaller cousins, the dolphins, can be seen all year round.
