Mozambique - Benguerra Lodge
Dates available throughout 2008
Situated 25 miles off the Mozambique mainland amongst tropical jungle vegetation on Benguerra Island which is part of the Bazaruto Archipelago over 400 miles north of the Mozambican capital of Maputo, Benguerra lodge offers spectacular scuba diving and blue water sports fishing over pristine coral reefs. There are in fact five separate islands within this archipelago which (at some 540 square miles in size) is one of the largest in the Indian Ocean next to the Seychelles.
At certain states of the tide, sharks and giant trevally, plus stingray and guitarfish can all be caught from the shore off north point in the deep water channel separating Benguerra from nearby Bazaruto Island. The Lodges two 25 foot trolling boats (which take four anglers) specialise in off shore species such as sailfish, tuna, king mackerel, bonito, barracuda, wahoo, dorado etc. Alternatively, the resident guide can take you (two anglers at a time) bait fishing on the drift‚ using small sardines and mackerel on 20lbs. test tackle, or fly fishing using 12 and 15 weight outfits in his 17 foot, central console boat ,sporting twin 40 hp engines, over inshore reefs for several species of trevally, including the giant trevally, plus queen fish, king mackerel, green jobfish, African pompano, jacks and sharks. Both bull and black tips provide exciting sport. 50lb. class stand-up outfits are at hand when sharks show up. All tackle is provided.
The best period to experience all these options is during May and June when winds are minimal. The bird life on the Island is quite spectacular, especially at breakfast time when doves, guinea fowl, finches and red squirrels etc. feed beside the patio. There are also freshwater lakes on the island containing tilapia and huge crocodiles. Cost: prices may vary - available on request
