The best-known township in South Africa
is Soweto- an acronym for SOuth WEstern TOwnships - scene of the 1976
student uprising and a powerful symbol for democracy in South Africa.
Situated 15 minutes or so from Johannesburg, with over 1 000 visitors
a day , it is one of the countries top 20 tourist destinations.
Possibly
a surprise to tourists, Soweto boasts some upmarket suburbs as well as
more basic homes. On Vilakazi Street you'll find the former homes of
two Nobal prize winners Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Tutu, while Kliptown
is where the Freedom Charter was signed. There are shopping malls, craft
markets, museums and art galleries. the Soweto Shebeen Route offers a
unique experience.
